SCENE DESIGN
The scenes are designed to start off bright and happy, beginning with the task of collecting puppies, to progressively grow darker and grimmer, ending in a fashion as expected from the Game of Thrones franchise. PHYSICAL RIG The physical rig is designed to create an environment where outside distractions are lessened to increase the player's immersive experience in the environment. Light is blocked with black fabric to minimize outside visual distractions and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones are provided to minimize outside audio distractions. The physical rig is designed to look like a war-tent from the Game of Thrones universe. Colourful fabrics and House sigils are used to attract players. ATTRACTING AN AUDIENCE Or "Gimmicks and Peacocking". In a relatively small lobby area where there are dozens of other games and projects from more than one class presenting, it was important to have a means of standing out from the others to make people want to spend their limited time playing our game rather than the many others. A foam model of the Iron Throne, an iconic object in the Game of Thrones universe, was built and placed near the physical rig. Many passer-bys and players waiting in line would take pictures of themselves sitting on the throne. It attracted a decent amount of attention and provided something for those waiting to play to do. The team also presented the project in costume to attract attention to the project, which was quite successful as many players commented on seeing our costumes and tent from the top (5th floor) and coming down just to try it out. Overall, it was fun to build digitally and physically, and even more fun to present. |
World of WesterosAn interactive environment with minor game elements to promote exploration.
Combining digital and physical, the goal was to create an immersive environment and minimizing outside distractions to optimize the digital immersive experience. Presented at Surrey Central SFU Immersive Environments Showcase. AUDIENCE Inspired by the Game of Thrones series, this game was made to appeal to both fans and non-fans by allowing the player to play as an unnamed character that is separate but also a part of the established story. For fans, they will understand the hints throughout the game. For non-fans, it will simply be a medieval exploration game with an implied story. Class project. Team of 4. My Role

Out of Sight, Out of MindAn interactive picture frame where the portrait will animate when no one is looking at it, but will turn into a still image when someone is looks at it.
Using a code that will randomly cycle through animations to play when no face is detected, the portrait would be less stagnant and predictable and thus more interesting. Since the portrait is a still image when observed, dialogue and sound effects are used in the animations to attract attention and a means of making the people who pass by turn their heads instead of simply walking past in the event that they miss the animation. This project was presented in the Aberthau Mansion in 2013. Class project. Team of 4. My Role

BRAINSTORMING
The brainstorming session was primarily sharing interesting ideas from popular shows and browsing YouTube for "creepy" pranks. From researching the presentation location, Aberthau Mansion, we decided on a "haunted mansion" theme and brainstormed ideas stemming from this The idea of a changing or "living" image came from "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. The idea of the "haunted portrait" came from a Ghostbusters episode where a ghost communicates and scares the living from a picture. The idea of the portrait coming to life when no one is looking at it and freezing when someone is looking came from the Weeping Angels from the Doctor Who universe whom become quantum locked (turn to stone) when they are observed, but coming to life and moving at impossible speed when not being seen. DESIGN CHOICES Due to the rich history of Aberthau Mansion going back to the second World War, we chose to have our subject appear as though he is from the time period, implying that he is the spirit of a resident of the mansion from the 1940s trapped in the portrait. The greenscreened backdrop is a wall from the actual mansion that is edited in Photoshop to appear newer to imply that the picture was taken during the earlier years of the house. ANIMATION CHOICES The animations were designed to imply a story. True to the "haunted house" theme, the animations are either scary, such as the man in the portrait turning into a demon and consumed by fire, or cryptic, where the man will call out to passer-bys claiming that bizarre events are happening in the house. These animations are vague but thematic enough for viewers to speculate on the story of the man in the portrait. |
STORY
The assignment was to remix a game where an ant is chased by an antlion and would perpetually move forward until it is caught. The goal was to move and avoid obstacles until the ant was eaten. We remixed this idea to be the ant being a computer virus which uses the songs as a means to hack into a system. The antlion would have played the role of an anti-virus that would kill the ant virus if too many keys were missed during gameplay. IT IS A PROTOTYPE As it is a prototype, some features are there as placeholders and not implemented, such as the score board which was intended to record scores for individual songs and compare with others online. The Antlion anti-virus concept was not implemented in this iteration and if the player misses too many, they would only suffer from a lower score instead of a game over. |

Presentation on
|
A Powerpoint presentation edited in Photoshop for a Health Science class.
Slides are designed to have high contrast colours and visually interesting images to attract the audience's attention and make them look at the slides as opposed to vacantly staring at a clock, wondering when the presentation will end. A unique title design for each page is meant to summarize the information on the page and capture the interest of the audience so they will read the text. Text is minimal and utilizes a large font so the audience can read it clearly from up close or far away. If a person needs to put in extra effort just to read a sentence, they are more likely to give up after a couple minutes and tune out. Text length is kept to a minimum to ensure that the audience does not feel intimidated by a wall of text. |
